The Central Statistics Office records Gross Domestic Increase

Botswana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has increased by 5.8 per cent in the
third quarter of 2011 which ended in December.

That, according to the Central Statistics Office, (CSO) is an increase of 3.6
per cent compared to that of the second quarter of 2011 attributed mainly to
construction, manufacturing and mining sectors, which had an increase of 24.3,
14.1 and 9.7 per cent respectively.

However, that is with exception of water and electricity and other taxes on
products which recorded a decrease of 2.0 and 19 per cent respectively while
other industries recorded upward movement in the same period.

Also, the CSO reports that the GDP had an expansion of 7.8 per cent on a
year-on-year basis.

The estimated GDP at constant prices for the third quarter of 2011 was P7 205.4
million compared to the revised level of P6 809.2 million registered in the
second quarter.

The total final consumption recorded an increase of 13.5 per cent in the third
quarter of 2011 after an increase of 4.3 per cent in the third quarter of 2010.


However, government final consumption increased slightly by 0.1 per cent, fixed
capital formation recorded an increase of 20.5 per cent compared to 14.5 per
cent in the same period. Real exports of goods and services went up by
40.5 per cent in the third quarter of 2011 compared to an increase of 5.4 per
cent in the third quarter of 2010.

Imports of goods and services rose by 21.1 per cent compared to 5.9 per cent
