ECONOMY GROWS BY 9.6%

 Botswana economy grows amid news of global recession GABORONE - Botswana's economy grew by 9.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2011 as compared to a 2.2 per cent contraction in the first quarter, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has announced. The CSO stated in a statement that the increase is mainly due to increases in the construction and mining sectors which increased by 28.3 and 23.7 per cent respectively. However, the agriculture sector and personal services recorded decreases of 17.5 and 1.1 per cent respectively and other industries recorded upward movements over the period. On a year-on-year basis, gross domestic product expanded by 12.4 per cent in the second quarter, after growing by 6.5 per cent in the first quarter. The total final consumption recorded an increase of 9.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2011 after an increase of 12.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2010.The statement further said the government final consumption dropped by 10.4 per cent and fixed capital formation recoded an increase of 27.8 per cent compared with 8.9 per cent in the same period. The real exports of goods and services went up by 36.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2011 compared with a drop of 2.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2010.Imports of goods services rose by 16.3 per cent compared with 1.9 per cent n the same quarter of 2010.The first quarter contraction of 2.2 per cent was mainly to due to lower mining output; however the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts a modest GDP growth of 4.8 percent in 2011.The country's economy grew by 7.2 per cent in 2010 after dwindling by 4.9 per cent in 2009 due to economic recession which adversely affected the diamond sales.
